Because of the Moon C J Cutayne Books Reviews

Because of the Moon is a beautiful and inspiring book. It gives an inside look into Reservation life and conditions, contrasting with urban living. The characters really come to life and you care what happens to them, plus Because of the Moon has some really great ideas in it (you have to read it to see what I mean).

I have worked with First Nations (or "Native American") youth teaching music and art and they are a tremendous resource that we are missing out on. Very few people realize that the Native peoples are by FAR the most impoverished and forgotten of all those living in North America, and action must be taken NOW so that not all traditions are lost.

Wonderful books like Because of the Moon can make a difference with this - read it for that reason, or read it simply because it is a joy to read from beginning to end, but - read it.
When I started this book I didn't think I would like it, but I persevered and found a good story. It conveyed a good message - the importance of a strong father figure, or role model, especially for young teen age boys. I admired the mother's strength in "packing up" and moving away from the problems to protect her son. It showed the importance of family and learning one's background.
The First Nation stories were interesting. Sort of a fairy tale ending, but I did enjoy the book.
While the plot was predictable, I enjoyed the book. There were some rough spots but overall, it was enjoyable . I liked the characters a found them predictable but likeable. I think middle school students would enjoy the book.
It was a great read and made me not want to put it down. There were some grammatical errors that did detract from the story, but all in all, it was a great book. I highly recommend it!
I really enjoyed 'Because of the Moon" with its story line, locations and characters. It's easy to read and follow as it moves through the setting of a Native American reservation, its people, history and traditions. The relationship between Jay and his mother and their relationship with her father, Jay.s grandfather, is precious and pure.
I enjoyed Because of the Moon very much. The beginning drew me in and immediately made me feel that Jay was a believable character. The author has a real feel for the plight of the adolescent and the touches of humour and insightful descriptions were appealing. Jay's problems fitting in to his new community were handled sensitively and I enjoyed his interactions with Grampa and all the other characters. Grampa shared some wonderful First Nations stories with Jay and the projects they worked on together were educational for the reader as well as Jay. Jay's meeting with his city friend Anthony as well as facing his Grampa's hospitalization, and finding out the truth about Gordon helped Jay gain some perspective on what's important and true for him. I think this book could lead to some interesting discussions in highschool English or Social Studies classes. The potlatch at the end of the book and the community's inventive solution to their financial woes helped the book end on an upbeat, hopeful note. I look forward to reading more books by Colleen Cutayne.
Jay runs into trouble. Nothing new, trouble is his middle name. Then trouble lands him on a First Nations reservation, to stay out of juvenile detention. Can he change his life? Will he avoid going to jail?

C.J. Cutayne has crafted a wonderful tale about family and the First Nations tribes. The story has a flow rarely found and instructs without preaching. Her characters embed themselves in your heart, as much for their struggles as for their victories.

I highly recommend this book.
